i'm experiencing the same problem. on top of that, e-mail directed to the webmaster bounces back with the message that e-mail is no longer being accepted at that address. and the fact that this syncs with the turnover of the month might indicate that the site is in some kind of trouble. a similar interruption ocurred several months back when the site was being worked on, but this was for a matter of less than a day. can anyone connected with the site tell us what's going on? |

Right I'm not associated with the site, though I have the unhappy job of looking after similar things!! I've emailed botht webmaster (which bounced) and Jeff, who converts materials and puts them up, hopefully there will be some news sometime.
To me it looks as though they have moved filesystems, so maybe to a new server, and the file system permission sets are denying access as they are often overlooked, very easy to fix, but only if someone is around to do it!
We'll see, I have a lot of cold nights in the garage working on my project so I could do with his company..... |

Mr Clavin should know his great site is being read religiously and that this forum is an effective way to "beat the tom toms for help".

I did a full formatt my hard drive and re imput the OS because I thought it was my equipment. I spoke to the manufacturer of my router/firewall , my ISP and Real Audio and all were baffled. Jim C said his worked and that made me more crazy but THANKS for letting me know it wasn't my machine.
I hope it gets back soon as I would hate to not be able to hear that golden voice again. I just found the site from "Exceleior You Fathead" which I started reading. If only for the few times I lisatened I am happy to have heard him again. Reading the book I could almost hear his voice but to actually hearit was priceless.
THANK YOU again for letting me know it wasn't me or my computer, |

I don't know gang. I've tried several times over the last few weeks and don't have any problems. I use this link:
http://shep-archives.com/netjuke/
I have tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer. I cannot say if AOL or REALAUDIO might have something to do with it since both are banned from residing on my computer.

What vrsion of Internet Explorer are you using I am using 6.0.2800.1106. I tried RealAudio but no good. Initially I would open it in the "Media" window then click on "Default Player " which was Windows Media Player version 9.00.00.3344. This worked at first then around 2/28 it went down. I tried opening the files in RealAudio when Windows Media Player was inop to no avail. The clips would not open with either Windows Media Player or RealAudio 10. All this started around the end of February. Is ther a password or something else you have? Also the WebMaster's e-mail addrress is inop it comes up undelieverable.
I just went to the site a few moments ago and it is still inop. Comes up in Windows Media Player error message COOD1198 or unable to connect, not responding. Under RealAudio it comes up with a general error that it can not connect and both say maybe the site is offline.
If you have any ideas I would love to try them as I miss the clips or my daily dose of Shep. I even tried your link right from your posting but this too is not working for me. I am atleast thankful my machine is not the problem.
The Flicklives site is a great thing Thanks for it. You give us a lot of info in one place and there is not a lot of stuff around except for what you have. |

Jim,
I get the same errors you get, and I've been getting the error while trying to email the admin for about three weeks now.
Over the past few years I've downloaded every Shep file from shep-archives. I had been emailing with Charles Hayden (admin of shep-archives.com) about ways to get the shows out to more fans and even find some new fans, and he agreed that a podcast would be a good idea.
So, I started The Brass Figlagee. It is fully functional and has been for a month, but I've been waiting to get Fred W McDarrah's permission for his famous photo of Shep before going public. Well, Fred cashed my check almost a month ago, and I haven't gotten an invoice or anything, even after a polite reminder or two. So, the podcast isn't registered with iTunes Music Store yet. But it's quite usable.
Long story short, if you're looking for an episode a day (with 47 episodes already backlogged) check out the podcast. If you're not using iTunes (Mac or Windows) or some other RSS aggregator, and you want to just manually download the episodes with your browser, the RSS feed is here. You will need an RSS-aware browser like Safari or (I'm told) FireFox. I don't know about the latest Windows Internet Explorer.
In general I'm running the episodes in chronological order, with exceptions made for holiday and seasonal topics. If any Shep fans here have any requests for their favorite episodes to appear earlier, I'm open to requests.

Steve thats great! thanks a bunch, I know it's no small amount of effort doing stuff like this, especially as a labour of love! For what it's worth I think you're right moving to podcast, the netjuke system is a little antiquated in todays world, and podcasting is the in thing, so it will hopefull get more shepheads converted ;-)
For those of you that arent itunes subscribers, while firefox has the 'sage' RSS reader it got confused by the podcast link, however 'Juice' loved it, and its cross platform:
http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php
The plan is to sit an old PC in the garage as a media server (dirty great hard disks full of video's, cd's, etc etc oh yeah and an armchair ;-) ) so now I just need something like media monkey for Linux....
Anyhoo, thanks again, I can stop talking to myself as I make pigeon poo on my chassis [:D] |

I too tried to copy his work but started late about a month or 2 before the website went dead.
His voice is like a time machine. Most of what he spoke is as true and elevent today as back then. My mother , a big shep fan who got me listening, was in my house and i put on a few of his pieces ...her eyes lit up and she had a look as if she met an old friend on the street.
I don't have windows XP or iTunes can I listen to them on my MP3 Player or can they be converted.\
THANKS again for continuing to keep Shep alive |

Thanks again I don't have I Tunes nor do I have XP, I know that you need XP for IPod stuff. Can I download and play the stuff on my generic MP3 Player or Windows Media Player/ RealAudio 10.
In your bio you mention some great books but another is The America Of George Ade. It is forworded by Jean Shepherd a fan of George Ade, George Ade was a humorist like Shep who worked up til 1944 [born around Civil War times]. It says that Jean SHepherd was a big fan of George Ade and the book is done in fable like way with the same type of things Shep qould have lied. It is a quick read so give it a try. I got my copy from a local library. Thanks again |

I am using IE6 and all I get from the RSS is a listing as if programing the site. Can I set up a second borwser and use it as a non default one and how do I get the other browser that works. I need something i can convert to MP3

Paramedic,
The files are standard MP3 files. So yes, you can copy them onto any MP3 player and listen. If you have MP3s on your PC, and neither Windows Media Player nor RealPlayer will play them, you may need an MP3-specific player, for instance Media Monkey 2.4.
You can use iTunes with Win2K, SP4 or higher. If you're using an older Windows version than that, I just ran a search on the excellent www.versiontracker.com site, and found the freeware program Simple Podcast Client - 1.0. I haven't tried it, and there's no feedback about it, but over 700 people have downloaded it and there are no complaints, which is a good sign. It is compatible with Win98 and higher.
All the other programs I saw, including iPodder and Juice, require Win2K or XP. If Simple Podcast Client - 1.0 doesn't get you up and running, and you can't find anything on www.versiontracker.com that does, leave a response here and let me know what version of Windows you are running. I check the forum a few times a day.
Also, let me know: do you mainly want to listen at your computer? Or is your preference the MP3 player? There are a few software MP3 players I could include on my web page so folks could listen straight through their browsers; maybe I should look into that.
Thanks for the tip on the George Ade book. I'm at the library every few weeks, so I'll look for it.

For folks without RSS or Podcast abilities who'd like to listen to The Brass Figlagee podcast, check out The Brass Figlagee on Gigadial. This will show you a page from which you can download all the MP3 episodes so far.

The site has a lot of great clips and again I thank you for making him come alive again for me. For all the Shep-aholics out there without iTunes you gave us some great stuff. By the way I have Windows Millenium Edition [ME] and can not install the i tunes software.

My intention is to upload a show per day, which is usually 45 to 85 minutes long. When there are a bunch of short, related clips, I'll put them all up in a day, so some days won't get short-changed. So far I've put up 48 episodes, and haven't missed a day yet. I have the workflow down to about five minutes per night, so it is really easy. I currently update the feed between midnight and 12:30AM EST. When I find a job I may switch to an earlier time in the evening, so I can get to bed and not be pooped at work.

Bravo, Steve! All of us who recognize the importance of preserving Shep's broadcast legacy -- which came perilouly close to being lost to the wind -- are in your debt. The Brass Figlagee site would have been a great contribution to The Cause, but is even moreso with the Archive in limbo. And on top of that, you've got some stuff not in the Shep Archive (the 1957 material, for instance). Here's hoping your podcast and website will be used to spread the word to a new generation. |

Steve, I too have a few hundred of the programs, but I have never seen (nor heard) the "fragments" you are providing!!..Thank you immensely.
I know of at least one occasion Max was able to provide a "fragment" with a full program following, but otherwise, the fragments might be considered rare amongst the rare.
BTW, max's airing of the show of 1965 02 18 was the one he led with a fragment of the so-called "farting contest"...[:D]

As far as I know, all my Shep MP3s came from the Shep Archives over the past three years or so, and perhaps just a few from Gnutella. When possible (right now, in fact) I share them on Gnutella as well. I would speculate that Max avoids the fragmentary content in order to present a more complete, professional-sounding show.
This reminds me of something I'm concerned about, since it'll take over three years to podcast all the MP3s I currently have. I hope I'm not inadvertently including any of Max's WBAI material in my podcast. I figure if he wanted to do a podcast, he would. Plus, he needs to promote listener donations to keep WBAI (and his excellent show in particular!) on the air, whereas The Brass Figlagee is solely about spreading Shep's work to current fans, and hopefully new fans. It's kind of a grey area, since Shep's own radio work is public domain, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. I figure if Max's voice is in the show, it shouldn't be in The Brass Figlagee. Please, if I do accidentally include a WBAI show, let me know so I can remove it immediately. I haven't listened to everything in my library of > 1450 Shep MP3s (about 13.5G, which is what the Shep Archives has), so it could possibly slip through. Thanks, everyone.
BTW, the same thing goes for Shep's LPs and CDs. Since they are still for sale, I can't include them in good conscience.
On another subject, I just added a free player to the site, so visitors can listen to any of the podcast episodes with one or two clicks.

Since Max's stuff is not in the archives, (for the most part), and I missed maybe the first 3 years of his great show, I try to acquire his older programs on WinMx..
I appreciate Max's narration prior to the programming, and I understand the legality of his having to station I.D., so long as I can still get the end product, but so many of Max's older shows are just not available.
Ironically, I hate most "re-runs" on TV, but would love to hear some of Max's older programs, and wish his show aired more than once a week.(THAT SUCKS!!!)
If Jim Clavin did not provide the internet feed and these sites, I would indeed be a "mess"....

A couple of MP3 download sources:
http://www.jeanshepherdpodcast.blogspot.com/ (great list of links pointing to MP3's on archive.org)
http://www.mediafire.com/shepfiles (fan posting of collection)
use a dowload manager to conveniently grab multiple files.
