Here's to you, Delbert Bumpus.

By: Colonel

On June 6, 1944, Delbert Bumpus went ashore in a light tank on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. His tank was in support of the infantry troops of the Big Red One that day. It was on that beach that Delbert assumed command of his tank after its commander was struck in the head by an artillery shell and died immediately after landing on Easy Red sector. Although Delbert did not meet a similar fate, he would be permanently damaged by the horrors he witnessed that day and the many days immediately following. He never fully recovered.
