Nat Hentoff -- historian, novelist, jazz and country music critic, syndicated columnist, radio disc jockey and occasional record producer -- died in New York yesterday at the age of 91. Hentoff wrote the liner notes accompanying the iconic Charles Mingus jazz album "The Clown," for which Shep did the improvised narration in 1957.
At the time of Shep's death in 1999, Hentoff, then a Village Voice columnist, was quoted as saying, "He was one of the best continuous ad-libbers I've ever heard. He was like a jazz musician. He knew the chords, but second to second he didn't know what melody he was going to put on them." |
