Elie Wiesel and Shep

Elie Wiesel -- Holocaust survivor, Nobel Laureate, and renowned author -- died today. Wiesel had told of the first time he was invited to speak at the prestigious 92nd Street "Y" in Manhattan. It was an evening in 1966 and he was to follow Jean Shepherd. After Shep finished speaking, much of the audience -- to whom Wiesel was apparently unknown at the time -- left. Few in the center's Kaufmann Hall remained. Disappointed, a resigned Wiesel nevertheless pressed on, believing he would never be invited back. He was, and subsequently delivered hundreds of lectures at the "Y." I have found no record of any further appearances there by Shep.
Wiesel recounts the foregoing anecdote in his 2000 book And the Sea is Never Full: Memoirs, 1969-. In it, Shep is referred to as "she." I can only assume the error is attributable to an editor at Schocken/Random House, the publisher. |
