Winter Activities Date: 01-13-2015 By: MrRazz	As winter has settled in, my mind drifts (happens quite often at my age) back to my youthful days in Hessville. Remember sledding down the hill south of 169th St. east of the water tower...still have my flexible flyer with black tape over one side of the steering after crashing into another sled...it's been thru my 2 kids and now grandsons. Shoveling snow to make a few extra bucks. And my favorite...ice skating...Lost Park, Harding Park, and occasionally Hessville Park, and even on the street after the cars had packed the snow down and with the thaw/freeze turned to ice. Often wonder if the city still has these ponds in the parks and if the kids use them, or if video games have replaced these fun activities. Great memories!	21

Do remember that storm well...pulled my sled down to 165th to pick up my bundles of "Times" to deliver...the usual drop off at my house was impossible.

02-16-2015 ( Reply#: 9113 )	S C Jones	I've been iced in for one day and am already stir crazy or have cabin fever. If we had had snow, I could have been out in it and sledding with an 80 yr. old neighbor on her ancient sled. The ice we have on the roadway (within our neighborhood it will not be salted, sprayed, scraped.) reminds me of the year someone in my Grand Park neighborhood got a new appliance that came in a huge cardboard box. That box became our sliding platform of choice in the street under the streetlight in front of our house. And we belly-flopped on to sleds in those flat-lands. Sleep came easy after several times in the cold and snow. Sleep doesn't come as easy for me now, and a few minutes in the cold and ice is all I want to have. You Kentuckians got a big snow, you lucky ducks.

02-17-2015 ( Reply#: 9115 )	S C Jones	Seejay, Do you have ice under your snow? (You did get snow?) I know Hopkinsville has almost a foot of snow, if not more. If we get any snow, it will come today/tonight. We have only sleet/ice covered streets and sidewalks and virtually no traffic--well, except for those who take to the interstates thinking they will be clear. Semis either lined up on interstates or jack-knifed. I don't expect to get out of my house for at least 2 more days with the temperatures so low.

People here are still gun shy over the ice storm they had in '09. so the mere mention of 'snow' is enough to close down the schools and empty the bread and milk shelves in the local Kroger. I guess they will always remember the same way we remember Jan '67...Cj
02-18-2015 ( Reply#: 9117 )	S C Jones	We got a good coating of snow this morning, so I was able to walk out to put the trash can out for pick/up. Underneath the snow is still ice, but the traction was good today. An Ice storm and the 2010 flood here, caused many to listen up when told to prepare. I found this time that there were fewer rushes to get, but a steady gathering in a staples just in case. (But, then, I live in a more sparsely populated area of town--the edge of suburbia and going into rural. (However, that won't last long, with the vulture developers looming over the county.

I will have to admit though, after living down here for a few years, any winter weather that is fastpitched to me becomes a little harder to pick up each time...Cj

02-20-2015 ( Reply#: 9121 )	silentshep	Reminds me of the Shepherd Show from 12-21-62. The Boy Scout trip to the snow covered Sand Dunes,,, They slide down the winter Dunes on a Bob Sled out onto the frozen lake.. sheer terror.
04-24-2015 ( Reply#: 9123 )	Paddy	When we lived on Beech Street, I learned to skate at Irving Park at Columbia Avenue and Hoffman Street. We later moved to a house on Harrison Avenue, and we skated at Harrison Park on Hohman Avenue. Both parks had warming houses and drew lots of skaters. Today, the ponds at both parks are no longer, having been filled in with dirt.

I also remember flying on a toboggan down Swallow Cliffs in Palos Park years ago...heard the slides there are gone now too. Kind of sad, but nothing seems to stay the same...great memories though.

Either she didn't wrap around tight enough, didn't want to, or we had too many on the toboggan, but she got dragged most of the way down the hill. She looked pretty good before the ride, but she sure looked like hell when she crawled off at the bottom...covered in snow and ice and hair sticking out in all directions [:(!].
