Here's a photo of the giant Frostop mug from Morton's 1969 yearbook.

We lived in the neighborhood for the most of the 60's, but my mind's a blank on Frostop. Can't imagine that I could have missed it, since it looks as big as the giant coffee cup that Jack Benny swims in in "The Horn Blows at Midnight". Maybe I was too fixated on the Dunkenburger's nearby to ever notice Frostop.

Glad I'm not the only one to remember "The Horn Blows at Midnight" !!! I still remember watching it on TV late at night, as a kid!

I am soooooooo glad you said that, Larry. I only remember it being south of 173rd. What little bit of time I put in that 'neck-o-the woods' was hitting "Junk-in-burger"...Cj |

CJ--
Yeah...now it's coming back. Frostop was directly south of 173rd (as you said), to the left of the Gulf Gas Station on the corner. "Junk-in-Burger" (I never heard that one before!) was another block further--south of 174th and closer to the Borman.

Thank you. An uncle of a childhood friend of mine bought that place. He later went on to secure the franchise for 'Big Wheel' on the Blvd and later 'Red Wheel', near Southlake Mall...Cj |

Frostop had great root-beer in large, ice-cold, frosted (of course) glass mugs. Good stuff! They also sold hot dogs, burgers, etc., but we only went there for the " mug shots"!

I remember "Big Wheel" on Indpls. Blvd. I worked there as a short order cook for the drive in service when I was a senior in high school, ('62-'63). |

I didn't know that Big Wheel went back that far; was it called "Big Wheel" in '62?

I worked in the short order section as well, Roger. I was there in '67 and a senior in high school.
I remember some of the names, but I don't know if they were there when you were:
Randy, a black guy who cooked in the diner section
Garcia, bussed tables
Pat, a waitress (and did a Playboy bunny thing)
Vince, prep chef...Cjquote: Originally posted by Roger D

Yes it was Big Wheel back in '62. I believe Vince was there when I was. I only worked there for two or three months. I graduated mid-term, (Feb.'63) and went to the mill. |

They were giving me $60 a week, which was big money to me at the time. Then I found out how much the mills wanted to give out and I made my big career jump to become a Vocational Motor Inspector at Inland. After jumping in and out of the VietNam meatgrinder, I went back to Inland briefly and then Youngstown (aka J&L, Lykes, LTV, Arcelor and beyond). 8 years in Information Technology at IU, then Murray, KY.
I'll bet you just dying to know all of that, weren't you!
By the way, this may be a well known fact, when Big Wheel wanted to open in Illinois, there already was a 'Big' Wheel' so that's why they called the place 'Red' Wheel...Cj |

Yo! Vince! Didn't he remind you of Vincent Price? That thin moustache and his voice, almost matched.
OK, who here worked there in '67-68?
Anyone remember Dessie (worked with Vince)? Jean was the prep cook in back. How about Paul and Wally Collard?
I started there on Feb 12th, 1967.

I don't recall the names you mention, other than Vince. I was there a little before you.
But there was a Steve Walker--dishwasher
Roger Allee--bus
Sanford Levinson--manager
Jim & Kathy Lakotos--Cook & Waitress
Jack Ring--cook
Gene Darnald--cook
Jimmie--cook
George something, German guy,--manager for a while
There was another prep chef, a Mexican guy, but I don't remember his name.
In fact, now that I think about it, I believe I started there in '66...Cj

Jim Lukatis (note spelling) was manager in '67-69. He and Kathy married in '68, I believe.
Gene Darnald (Jean?) was a prep-cook in back.
George something, German guy,--manager for a while
The only other manager I remember was Jim Lucas, the night mnanger.

Jim Lukatis told me that all Illinois stores would be called "Red Wheels" or perhaps my uncle, George Wood, who with some guy named Warner, operated the Gary IN store, told me this.
IOW, it was Big Wheel in IN and Red Wheel in IL.
