Welcome, romeo68!
I sure do remember the name of the place, but I don't think I remember the drive-in itself.
Keep posting. We need some action around here.

I remember it had mosquitoes just the the others. I remember going there and 41 and sometime to Ridge Road with the family and when I was driving to the Y & W on occasion but I mostly went to 41 and Ridge. I'm not sure if I ever went to the one behind K-Mart on Indianapolis Blvd. We have lived near Valparaiso for the last 21 years and I don't think we've been to the 49er once.

I've been to all the Drive In Theaters mentioned.
The one behind K-Mart on Indy Blvd was called the Hammond Outdoor. I say the Beatles "Let it Be" there...terrible sound over those metal speakers! Both K-Mart and the Outdoor theater were built on an area that was a swamp, and then was a dump and filled in with garbage...perhaps that is why the mosquitos were so vengefull!!!
BobK - I live in Northern Minnesota and we've taken our family to the 49'er Outdoor Theater about 3 times. My kids love it...especially when they play "The Beep Beep Song!" |

My folk would dress us kids up in our PJ' and head for one of those drive-ins, but I don't remember which one. It had a concrete pool there filled with water and boats in it for the kiddies. All the rides were free...Cj |

The first movie I remember seeing at the Ridge Road Drive-in (I too was in the back seat in my pj's) was Moby Dick in 1956, with the great Gregory Peck......"I'll run ya through!"...

Romeo, et al,
Check out the thread/topic "Movie Theaters of 'da Region" below, where you will find lots of our stories, plus old newspaper ADS, most of which I got from the Hammond Times microfilm collection at the Hammond Library.
Included is a great MOONLITE Drive-In ad from the '50's, down near the bottom. We've also done a number of posts about the Ridge Road Drive-In---I forget what topic they're under (maybe the Highland one?)

PS-- You guys went in your pj's? Did you walk into the snack bar wearing them? |

Yeah, but what happened when YOU had to "go"? Sitting in the car for 3 or 4 hours, drinking coke, etc....you had to use the john, right? Must have been embarassing running around the joint in your pjs.
INCIDENTALLY---the topic/thread with all of the info on Ridge Road Drive-In is "I know it's Highland but"; check it out below.

Most of the other kids were in their PJ's too. I don't think I knew enough about anything then to be embarrassed...Cj |

When I was a kid we lived in north Hammond (Clark St.). When we went to the "41" drive-in we would take a gallon thermos of kool ade and a grocery bag of popcorn.
As a teenager my date and I would stop at White Castle for a bag of "sliders" and off to the "41" drive-in. |
