Frank Reynolds and my dad (Mike Rapchak, Sr) used to announce basketball games together for WJOB back in the late '40's.

Thanks, 66! I never knew that Hank Stram had Region roots. I remember him from his coaching career with the Chiefs.

Thanks for the welcome Tom! [:)] My name is Chris Lannin. I am part owner of a company called the Region Sports Network. We are an independent production company that broadcasts a year round schedule of high school and local college sports on multiple stations. We are not currently doing business with WJOB but we are on WWCA 1270 AM. We also stream all of our events live on our website so transplanted Region folks can follow along with events back home. And every broadcast is archived for "On-Demand" replay. I am currently hosting the McDonald's Scoreboard Show on Friday nights until midnight after the football games end. Here is a link to our website:

My older brother Craig was just in town from Northern California and he introduced me to this forum and I have been glued to it every spare moment this week. |

HassoBenSobba - You know my brother Craig. (He showed me the video you did at OLPH when he was here last week. TOO funny!) I graduated with your sister Nancy. Do you have any old broadcasts that your may have done? We also have a historical society. |

East Chicago native http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Lofton
Has anyone noticed that a few years ago, the baseball diamonds in East Chicago parks had been remodeled? I was told that Kenny Lofton is responsible for these improvements. Thank you Kenny.
Others have mentioned Frank Reynolds and Charlie Finley. Here are some personal memories involving these two men.
Back when Frank Reynolds was anchoring the World News Tonight program for ABC News, he anchored the show from Washington D.C. However, there were times when he had to be in other parts of the country for some function and would not have enough time to return to his Washington D.C. studio. So he would then have to anchor the newscast from that location on that day. Well one time he had to travel to Chicago for a one day event. Later in the evening when it came time for him to anchor the show, I was assigned as part of the crew to get him on the air. He really impressed me by not requiring a teleprompter. He must have had a photographic memory.
After he passed away, the network compiled a video tape covering the entire funeral and memorial service since much of it occurred in Washington D.C. They authorized me to purchase a vcr and install it in the apartment of his mother so she could view this tape and see what she missed. She lived in south central Hammond at that time.
Also, back when I was in high school, my dad attended a local sports banquet and got to meet and chat with the guest speaker, Charlie Finley, the owner of the Kansas City A's baseball team. After my dad informed Charlie about my interest in baseball, he invited both of us to his Chicago office. There he gave me a Kansas City Athletics Louisville Slugger baseball bat. He wanted to give my one of his orange colored baseballs that he proposed for Major League Baseball, but he could not find a spare in his office. |

Great Story J!
Do you remember Ken Stoddard? He played basketball for EC Washington in early 1970's when they won a state championship. He also played College basketball and won a national championship, and then went on to play Major League Baseball as a pitcher and pitched for the White Sox. |

duane - It was Tim Stoddard. He was on ECW's undefeated state championship team in 1971 that was probably one of the 5 best high school basketball teams of all time in the whole country along with Pete Trgovich - 2 NCAA titles at UCLA, and Junior Bridgeman - who was on a Final Four team at Louisville; an interesting sidebar was that Trgovich guarded Bridgeman in the semi-finals. Stoddard won his title at NC State. He pitched for the Orioles, White Sox and the Cubs, and is now the pitching coach at Northwestern. Trgovich was the coach at East Chicago Central when they won the 2007 4A state basketball title and coached IU Northwest up until this year. |

Thanks duane and Second Son.
You can read about this East Chicago native's interesting career at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Stoddard.
Although I had forgotten about the specific players, I do remember the East Chicago Washington powerhouse basketball team in the early 70's. |

Are you referring to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_McClendon?
Also, Mike Sember was behind me at Bishop Noll. He played for the Chicago Cubs a couple of years and then disappeared. |

I remember my Mom showing me Frank Reynolds' picture in her high school yearbook. They graduated together from Catholic Central High School, now BNI. I believe it was the Class of 1941.

A former neighbor of mine also was a classmate of Frank Reynolds and probably your mother as well at Catholic Central. Next time I'm in the library, I'll have to check out the yearbooks. I'm not sure what year my neighbor graduated since he has passed away. |

Now that I think about it, since my Mom was born in late December, 1923, it may have been the Class of 1942.

Now you got me curious. I telephoned the Hammond library and had them check out the 1941 yearbook. The reference librarian informed me that Frank Reynolds was in the class of 41. |
