Jim;
Right across the street at the main entrance to Jack Fox, there was an elevator. I remember getting on the elevator as a child and going up about four floors to the top. The doors opened to an old cheap-looking, dimly lit hallway. About halfway down was a door with a frosted window that said "G.W. McVey, D.D.S." A tiny waiting room with no receptionist. When you walked in the door squeeked loudly and the second door opened and Doc McVey stuck his head out and said hello. He stood over seven feet tall and his hair mached his white coat. I remember getting in the chair and he would foot-pump you so high that even if you wanted to leave, you couldn't because jumping down from that height onto the white stone floor would kill you! I also remember the one window that from the chair you could look out and see roofs and watertowers and absolutely nothing else. No cars, no people, no neon lights. It was like a trip to another world. And the only sound was the hissing radiator and Doc quietly whisteling "Has Anybody Seen My Gal?" Tom W |

My mom took me to Dr. Friedman in the Calumet Bank building. He was an eye doctor. Because of a "lazy eye," I had to wear a patch on my good eye to force me to use the weak one when I was real little. I started wearing glasses when I was only two years old.
I remember how unpleasant the experience of having my eyes dilated was.
Dr. Friedman was a nice guy as far as I can remember. I remember that he loved to chew gum as he did his examinations.

Tom J, Maybe I'm confused but I remember Dr. Friedman as being next door to Goldblatts. I remember being in the waiting room for hours and hours reading walt Disney Comics and Stories comic books with Mickey Mouse serials that never had the next chapter. Eye dilation was horrible- much better today. He removed my tonsils and adnoids which was supposed to keep me from getting so many colds in the winter. Not only did it not help but the tonsils grew back and were shrunk with radiation treatments. He later moved to Indianpolis Blvd and would always comment on how big I had gotten over the years. I haven't thought of this stuff in decades!!! |

Possibly more than one Dr. Friedman? My Dr. Friedman was just an eye doctor as far as I know.
I'm sure about the location of his office. I was very impressed with the Calumet Bank building and the elevator rides.

I remember being taken a few times to a Dr. Kuhn somewhere in downtown Hammond. I think he was an Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat specialist somewhere on Rimbach Street. |

I remember Dr. Rudolph. He was our dr. until he passed away. I remember the nurses who gave the shots. I got my polio shots there, the one nurse was very slow when giving the shots the other did it quickly. The quick nurse when giving me a polio shot hit the muscle in my arm causing it to cramp. IT HURT!! |

Wasn't Dr. Kuhn's office behind St. Margs, across from the emergency entrance? |

Although the clinic handled other than eye problems, I remember when I went there that they treated a lot of industrial eye problems.

Didn't know doctor Rudolf, but it sure reminded me of this 1960's song...

The Kuhn clinic was in a converted old house from the way it was layed out. My mother told me it was an entire family of doctors so there could have been a sister dr. Dr. Friedman was an eye.ear, nose and throat specialist. As I recall all of them were always behind in their office appointments. I guess the word got out to all the mothers, who the good doctors were. I also think I spent a lot of time waiting to see doctors as a kid. |

My ex (still friends) went to Dr. Rudolph. She said Dr. Rudolph's nurse's name was Ruby. She also said Dr. Rudolph gave suckers to the kids when their parents got shots! She also remembers Dr. Rudolph bring suckers along when he made house calls and that Dr. Alt took over his practice when Dr. Rudolph retired. |
