Man, if I were from Hessville I would be all over this! I just might buy a copy anyway.
Here's a link to the Times article. The article has a link for buying a copy of the book.

Thanks, Nitti, for sharing this.

I sure am glad I scanned and uploaded that postcard of the old Morton building with the name and dates on it. If he only had asked, I could have given him a much better quality image than the one taken from the Yahoo slide show. Sorry about that, I just couldn't resist!
(By the way, the picture is on the link to the book at the bottom of the Times article.)

When you look at this forum and see all that we have input, anyone who has a mind to write, could find a goldmine of information to include!!!!! We need to read it to see if our own stories are in there. [:)] |

The book sounds interesting, though the name Bolinger doesn't ring a bell. What years did he attend Harding? What years did he teach? What years does he write about? ... OK, I followed the link to http://www.publishamerica.net/product88564 , where it says:
"Buddy is a boy growing up during the late 1940's through the early 1960's in Northwest Indiana. Fascinated but bewildered by the world around him, Buddy finds meaning through his family, friends, neighbors, and classmates (grades one through six). It is a world of the five senses, where Buddy at times misinterprets expectations of other people, making his story both universal and hilarious.
"The reader may see himself in Buddy's world, a world of beauty, absurdity, and occasional terror. It is a child's world remembered with affection by a grown-up, who is only a little less awed and bewildered as an adult than he was as a child."

O K I just ordered it. This forum is really on the ball. At last somebody writes about Miss Jane Fowler-my kindergarden teacher. Maybe Bollinger is not his real name. I think I remember a Ballinger some place in school. |

Just spoke to my wife. John Bollinger was her English teacher at Morton in the early '70's. |

He doesn't appear in my 1964 or 1966 Top Hat yearbooks. So he must have come to Morton shortly after its Golden Age (including the greatest class ever, the Class of '66) was over.

I've been lurking for a long time, but I finally registered for an account because of this thread. Mr. Bolinger was one of my favorite teachers. I had him for English in the late 1980's. He was kind of quiet and very smart.
I remember one time we were about to take a test on a book we'd been assigned. Right before he handed out the tests, he closed his eyes and, in his normal speaking voice, said something like "Please do not try to use any crib notes. You should be able to do fine on your own." I realized he had seen writing on my hand and was talking about me. When I handed in my test, I showed him my hand, where I'd written a reminder to myself to bring the book back to school the next day to return it to him. He breathed a sigh of relief and said "I am so glad you showed me that." Yelling and discipline weren't among his favorite parts of the job.

I must remember to report that my copy showed up yesterday. I"ve read the first few chapters and the book has made me laugh several times. So far, the Ace is too close to Harding school but that is a small point and doesn't stand in the way of a good story! |
