Thanks, Larry, but "it ain't no biggie."
I only volunteered for the job because I thought I could take care of the occasional spammer that we get and not have to bother Jim. As it turns out, I still have to contact Jim about spammers, so that he can "kill" them, but I can at least delete their posts.
Probably the most useful thing I can do is help folks who mess something up in the first post in a new thread. The first post in a new thread can only be edited by a moderator. I have wished I could get back into one or two of my original posts in threads that I have started, and now I can.
I think I am supposed to be able to move posts from one thread to another, but I have not tried that yet. I don't think I will be doing that unless someone asks me to.
We have done just fine around here without a moderator, so I plan to just make myself available and otherwise stay out of the way.

First, congratulations to you Tom. It is good to have at least one active moderator to oversee the operations of a forum.
As you already mentioned, do you know why the first posting can't be edited by the original poster? Is that intentional or is that a glitch in the software? |

I have not a clue, Jay. I have received no instruction of any kind on the software. I have simply been given a few basic moderator powers for things like deleting posts, closing threads, moving posts, etc.

Tom:
None of this stuff has been explained to me.
It looks like the classification of a member is tied to his number of posts. I clicked on "members" up at the top to bring up the list of all members. I then clicked on the column heading "posts," which sorted the members by number of posts. I was amazed to see page after page of members with zero posts.
It looks like you are a "starting member" until you have 49 posts. When you make your 50th post, you become a "new member," and when you reach 100 posts, you are a "junior member."
If you could tell me whom you are looking for, I might be able to help you find him. How did you sort the member list when you were searching? I can't remember what the default sort is, but if the list is not already sorted by user name, click on that column label. That will arrange the members in alphabetical order.

Tom:
You "ain't" doin' something right. I can find both tsofred and FloridaKelly in the member list.
What I do is click on "members" up at upper right of the page, and then I click on "member name" once the list of members comes up. That brings up a list of members by their user names in alphabetical order. You will find tsofred on page 10. But, if you click the "member name" column head twice, it will bring up the list is REVERSE alphabetical order the second time. Then you will find tsofred on the first page.
There is a search window that would be even simpler to use, but you need to type in the right username or at leat a few characters in the EXACT sequence, and be sure the box is checked for "User Names," so that it knows that you want to search by user name.
I just typed "ts" in the search window and got three hits, one of them being tsofred. When I did it again and typed "tso," only tsofred came up. I typed "fl" and three people came up, one of them being FloridaKelly. When I typed "flo," only FloridaKelly came up.
Hope this helps.

Beats the crap outta me.
I don't have administrator privileges, so I can't see how things are set up. I actually see no more than a regular member sees, except that I have little icons that allow me to delete, edit, or move posts. I can also lock threads, so that no new posts can be added.
Like I said, I have one bullet, but I have to keep it in my pocket. [:D]
Tomster
P.S.
I am an administrator for a Jeep website, and we were able to set up classifications for users according to their number of posts. We could set the threshold values for number of posts, and we could make up the titles that we wanted to use for each class.

I have always emailed Jim Clavin when I see a spammer show up, and Jim has been quick to delete their posts and their accounts.
As far as vulgar or obscene posts, that has never been a problem here, and that is because of "who we are." We were raised in the days when kids were taught respect and were taught to work for what they had.
This is why I hope none of us post public invitations for people to come to Sheptalk. I guarantee you, we would become just like the message boards dedicated to contemporary life in "The Region."
Let's invite only the "right kind of people." When I say that, I am not making reference to their race, ethnicity, or social status; I am talking about people who were taught respect and were taught to work for what they have. The "right kind" of person might be black, white, native American, Hispanic, Asian, or whatever.

I have to agree with Jim and Bob regarding Planet Hammond. Nice place to visit, but Sheptalk feels like home? But, more power to the ones who like Facebook. It just isn't the same kind of sharing. There might be some valuable information from Planet Hammond that we can appreciate and vice versa! I'll check in there now and then to see what is happening and who is contributing.

I understand your dilemma. I can't find a "commission" or authority" in my state to address the situation either.
I received an email yesterday with the sheptalk address that was from a tsjay....
which I did not open. I will not open any more emails that come through sheptalk unless I recognize the name. There is the possibility (from what I have read) of there being stuff downloaded to your computer when you open bogus/scam emails and then your personal information is vulnerable. Not that I do any business online. But, it can get messy.
Thanks for inquiring.

Heard back from Jim, and he said the Email did not really come from Sheptalk but only APPEARED to come from Sheptalk. He said spammers have learned how to make Emails "look" legitimate so that they get through people's spam filters and so that people will open them.
I have experienced this with two email addresses of personal acquaintances. I get Emails that LOOK just like they are from them, but when I open them, they are spam messages.
I don't think they do any real harm. They are just aggravating.
Tomster
P.S.
Jim also said that if we forward him the Email, he can check out the message path in the header and find the source. Even then, I don't know if anything can be done about it. |

Tom the lisa doudou spam/scam email is stated to be from lisa123 who is a listed registered member of sheptalk. There should be a way to ban a person who is doing this to members.
If you really need me to copy and send the contents of the letter, I can do that and then you can send it to Jim? Or do I send that directly to Jim (goodness, this is getting to be a line organization and I haven't had to deal with line organization since retiring in 2005.... [:(]
Anyway, Lisa123 is the culprit and she is on our members list. |

Oh, I didn't catch the part about the culprit being a registered member with a user name of Lisa123. That's a horse of a different color. Of course, Jim can ban a registered member for spamming. He has done that lots of times. He has no tolerance for them.
I'll give Jim this info.
I'm sure Jim would be OK with your contacting him directly, but I'll go ahead and let him know about this. I am not an admin, just a moderator, and I don't have the authority to ban anyone, so Jim will have to take care of it.

I don't believe Mr. Clavin monitors the forums on a regular basis. He always takes action when a spammer is brought to his attention, though.

In view of all this spamming going on, I thought I'd add this little tidbit:
Back in the 90's, my wife and I had gone to DC on some business. She has a cousin that lives in Alexandria, Va and wanted to stop in and see her. We went there. She had a very nice appartment indeed! She was talking talking to Donna about different things, mostly stuff from their past. She then made some blurb about her and her husband to be, 'setting up shop in Africa'. "Africa!?!?! What are you even talking about?", I asked her.
Remember those BS letters that used to come in the mail (maybe still do) telling a tale of woe about some Indian family whose house burned down and now they have nowhere to live or some other such story? If you just sent in a dollar (or more), this unfortunate family can get back on their feet again. Maybe they even sent a little plastic Indian doll with it. ALL BOGUS!!!
"How do you get away with crap like this?"
All perfectly legal. Somewhere, some family has suffered this misfortune. Nobody said that the money will go to this family and most importantly, nobody has promised services or product for your money.
Then her cousin, (everyone called her "Side-Of-Beef" behind her back---pretty big gal)handed me a 3-ring binder, about a 4 inch one full of template letters with variations of stories like the one above. They were all categorized by who would fall for such stories; e.g. women over 75 who live in a certain area, live in a dollar median of whatever, etc.
How hard do you think it is to send out 50,000 of these letters and have 8000 people send back a buck or two?
Moral to the story is: fools and their money soon have a parting of their ways. I suppose it's entirely possible that 'Side-Of-Beef' has gone cyber and could be "Lisa Dou Dou" hustling up another meal at someone else's expense.......Cj |

Larry, when I was at Purdue in the mid-60's Der Region was a standing joke that all of the stone cutter and farmer's kids knew. When asked by a fellow student which part of Ind. were you from we always said The Region and the answer was, "Don't you mean Der Region?" |

All this "Spam-Scam" stuff reminds me that the "spiritual father" of this racket may indeed be Soupy Sales. On New Year's day, 1965, he was doing his live TV show from N.Y. and had a minute to fill at the end; so he looks into the camera and tells all of the kids---whose parents were "out late last night and are probably still asleep"---to sneak into the bedroom and "take all of the those green pieces of paper (with the bearded guys on them) out of mom and dad's wallets and purses and send them to me, and I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico." $80,000 arrived at the station within the next week, and Der Soupster was suspended for two weeks. When he went back on the air, his show's ratings went through the roof.

Tom J. you might want to alert Mr. Clavin and he may want to deep six that perpetrator. Also, mimi in mass backwards is treading on dangerous grounds with a sales pitch today. Maybe I need to get a life and get out of Sheptalk's forums?

Well, I'm sure George is going to be disappointed that you did not take his offer seriously. [:)]
I'll pass this along to Jim.

Dear Fellow Region Rats:
Thanks for all the expressions of concern for my health. It is so good to have all of you here at Sheptalk as friends.
I had the mother of all diverticulitis attacks beginning Friday, January 28th. I have had minor bouts with diverticulitis over the last few years, but in all of those instances the pain would go away in a day or so without any treatment. This time the pain was ten times worse, and it was not going to go away on its own.
I had Georgeann take me to the emergency room early in the afternoon on Saturday, January 29th. They ran CT scans that confirmed the diverticulitis and showed that one of the infected areas had actually burst open.
I was admitted to the hospital and was put on high powered antibiotics in hopes that surgery could be avoided. Unfortunately, the CT scan on Thursday, February 3rd, showed that things had gotten worse instead of better. The doc said he was going to have to do surgery, and when I asked him when he wanted to do it, he said "as soon as we can get the OR ready."
They removed 14" of my colon and put me on a colostomy bag. The doc hopes to remove the bag in a couple months and hook my plumbing back up. That will be another surgery to recover from.
To beat it all, Georgeann had the flu the whole time I was in the hospital and it developed into pneumonia. She was admitted to a room just up the hall from me on Tuesday evening. I was discharged the next morning.
Please continue to pray for both of us. The Lord will get us through this.

Hey Tom;
If it's any consolation, it seems to me that when we all left the region and quit breathing the smoke and crap and stopped drinking that great lake water, our bodies just seemed to deteriorate quickly. Seriously though Tom, my and Chaff,s thoughts and prayers are with you guys. Take care, tom w |

I spoke with Tom Saturday and he is recuperating very well. He will not be able to return to work for a while yet as he is to under go more surgery on his colon.
Tom's wife, Georgeann, is having problems with arthritis.
Remember them both in your prayers. |

Once again I thank all of you who have posted "get well" wishes, and thanks for all the prayers.
Georgeann is doing a little better, but her arthritis is still so bad that she can barely walk. She is in a LOT of pain.
The Old Tomster is coming along nicely. The Home Health nurses who come twice a day to dress my wound just keep going on and on about how they have never seen a wound heal as fast as mine has been healing.
I still don't know how long it will be before the doc wants to do the colostomy reversal surgery.
Keep up the praying!

Georgeann can barely walk. She really isn't getting any better, but she won't go to physical therapy like her doc wants her to do. What am I going to do with her???

Tom, I don't have an answer for this except you have to fiqure out a way to motivate her into going to p.t. Maybe she has some depression issues; your doctor can identify this. I am facing left knee replacement in April and everyone tells me 'you have to do the follow-up' to get back to decent walking.
Be sure and tell her she's too young for this way of thinking.
Good luck on this.

Rog:
Georgeann canceled her Friday appointment for therapy. She thought the appointment was at 1:00 PM and she had set in Dr. Hardison's office for an 11:00 AM appointment until well after 12:00 PM and still had five people ahead of her. She called me to come get her and she had me cancel her therapy appointment. As it turned out, the appointment was for 2:30 PM, and she could have made it.
I was hoping she would make another appointment this week for therapy, but so far she has not.
I'm doing great. It's my guess that in a couple weeks they will reverse that colostomy.

Tom J. called me about an hour ago with some very good news. Georgeann is cancer FREE!! She does have a serious infection in her body but it can be treated. Either IVs or surgery is possible.
Praise God that her problems are treatable.
I believe that Tom will post more details as they know more. |

Yep, like Roger said, no cancer!. The biopsy was performed Thursday and we were not expecting results until Monday, but the doctor himself called with the good news yesterday (Friday). That doctor was convinced that the PET scan showed cancer and he thought the biopsy was just a formality, but God had other ideas.
Thank You, Lord! And thank you all of my Sheptalk friends for you prayers.
Tom
P.S. This is still serious, so please keep praying. An infection that deep in the body that has been there this long may prove to be very hard to defeat. |

Update on The Tomster and Georgeann:
Georgeann came home from the University of Louisville Hospital on Tuesday, April 19th, after six days of treatment for her infection. She was treated with intravenous antibiotics after they drained the infection. They sent her home with a drain tube and collection bag, and I have to give her an antibiotic through a PICC line every eight hours.
The healing process is very slow for Georgeann; she can still barely walk, even with a walker.
Now the old Tomster is doing great. It looks like I should be able to go back to work on Monday, May 16th.
Thanks to all of you for your prayers. I have no doubt that they have made a difference. Prayer always does!

Tom, I haven't been out here in a looong time and pray that you and Georgeann have both recovered. As far a Georgeann's knee, PT is the only way to get back to walking.
