Larry:
What a COOL, COOL video! You did a FANTASTIC job with that!
I know Mel Blanc would be very pleased with what you did.
Thanks for sharing.

I know it's a holiday and all, but when you Region Rats get back to Sheptalk, be SURE to check out Larry's video.
The lip-syncing is perfect, and his routine is what I would call a perfect visual interpretation of the song.
No, I'm not a critic, but I recognize a top notch performance when I see one.
Nice job, Larry, really nice!

Hey this was really great! Which classroom did you film in? When I went there, there were large class photos in the old section hallway are they still there? Can you tell us about the ray gun sitting on your piano? Once again thanks for that and might we hope for a return of the professor?quote: Originally posted by HassoBenSoba
Check out my new Christmas video on YOU TUBE!
Does anyone remember Mel Blanc's nutty "Christmas Tree" song from the 50's?? Our dad brought home the record in 1958, and it's been knockin' around in my brain ever since. So last February, I decided to do something about it! The video is my 5-minute tribute to Mel and those great childhood Christmases---we filmed it in Our Lady of Perpetual Help School--which looks almost EXACTLY the way it did 50 years ago!
Enjoy the video---it's my Christmas greeting to everyone--but especially all of us who grew up in the Region!

Jim--
We filmed in Room 103--- first floor, East (front) side of building...the middle of the three rooms on that side. It was my 8th-grade classroom (my older brother's too--when the warden was Sister Barbara). My teacher in that room (1964-65) was a new arrival, Sister Dolita--her name adapted from the Latin "dolorosa" meaning "sorrowful", which immediately tipped me off as to the type of year it was going to be. Actually, she was OK..rather young and only occasionally brutal.
I chose 103 because it faced east and gave us better light for filming, but also because it was practically UNCHANGED in appearance--no kidding!
I did all of the "set decoration" for the video--attempting as much of an authentic 50's look as possible. We filmed one complete take of the LONG shot (with me head-to-toe....you can see the masking tape marker on the floor that I had to hit when I first entered), followed by a complete take of the MEDIUM shot (waist up). Then we did the close-ups with the funny faces, etc (which was a pain--you should see the OUTAKES!), and finally the "Nuclear Shot" at the end when I destroyed the tree (which could only be filmed once, since the tree was trashed). All of this was edited together by Mr. Jim Corey of Hammond (actual filming done by Dave Innes who now runs Hammond's Civic Center). We used a boom-box for "on-set playback" of the song, then tracked in a new CD recording for the final soundtrack.
I had hoped to get some young students involved....as if they were sitting in the classroom observing the professor's insane routine; they would then get disgusted and pelt me with spit-balls and paper wads at the end, which would propel me backwards into the tree. But it turned out to be too complicated to schedule any kids, so the idea was scrapped.
I think the ol' professor has hung up his cap and gown and will not be making any more apperances, as far as I know.
The big class photo montages that used to hang in the OLPH halls are no longer there, and the Pastor has no idea what happened to them.
The ray-gun on my piano (along with numerous other cool authentic 50's toys) is the "Electronic Space Gun" by REMCO. I believe I had this as a kid in 1959. The one I now have is not my original, but a copy I bought (along with the original box) about 20 years ago in a toy store in Park Ridge, Il (I think).
Incidentally, I have a 45-minute video documentary on old MOM-and-POP TOY STORES that I filmed in 2005, where I visit the sites of 10 great old stores in Hammond; lots of cool visuals, music, memories. As soon as I get it onto You-Tube, I'll let everyone know.

HassoBenSoba, after I replied to your private email, I visited this YouTube video. Although I have no recollection of that 50's song, I found your rendition to be quite entertaining. You do have a talent for performing. You reminded me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP3VAtGLQms
And it was interesting to see a billboard photo of your father before I knew him. I remember him looking similar to the way you appeared introducing this video.
Finally, I have a couple suggestions for alternate endings to your video. Click on the links below.

Larry,
Do I remember this song? How many times did we sit and listen to it at 6912 Magoun Avenue? What a classic.
And even more classic is your rendition of it here. As ideal as one could imagine or expect. As usual, you did a superb job. Bravo! [:D]
Your brother,
Mike Rapchak Jr.

Marie: Often when reading these threads, we run across names or incidents mentioned that really ring a bell in our memories. Sometimes this leads us to shoot an e-mail instead of putting the message on public forum. Your father's name is very familiar not only to me but my parents and grandparents as well. I was hoping to verify that he was in fact the man that we knew. Knowing him leads me to believe that your father is not the one that I thought. I didnt mean to disturb you though. Take care, Tom W |
