How to post pictures

I intend to post instructions on how to make pictures appear in our posts, but I know I will need to edit my text, especially as others suggest improvements. Since the first post in a thread cannot be edited, I will simply use this post as an announcement of my intentions and will post the instructions in the following post.
I know there are folks in here who know more about this stuff than I do, so please feel free to chime in with your ideas on how to make the instructions clearer or more complete.

To include a picture that will show up within the post that we are creating, the picture has to be in electronic format, and it has to be hosted somewhere on the Internet.
There are any number of websites on the Internet to which you can upload your pictures, and many of them offer their services for free up to some level of storage space. You will want to use a website that allows "hot links," which means that they will allow you to link folks to your picture on their website and will allow the picture to be seen on that person's computer screen.
Many websites where pictures can be hosted do not allow hot links, because this creates a lot of traffic on their server and uses up "band width." Think of "band width" as being a limit on how many people can visit a website at the same time. I use Photobucket.com for most of my picture hosting needs.
When you post a picture here, you are really just posting a LINK to the picture, not the picture itself. There is no strain on our server's memory capacity, because the picture is really not here, but remains on the host website's server, and there is no additional demand on our band width, because you are already here anyway.
When the picture is uploaded to the host website, it is assigned a URL, or "Uniform Resource Locator." Think of the URL as a unique address that leads to only that picture and to nothing else. No other picture or any other type of file resides at that location on the Internet. If the link (URL) is typed or copied and pasted correctly, it will lead the viewer from the website where the link is posted directly to that picture on the host website.
To make the picture show up in your post and not just show up as a link, type [ IMG ] URL [ /IMG ] leaving out the spaces. If I had not left out the spaces, the website would think that I was trying to actually make a picture show up and a red X would appear.
To obtain the URL after you have uploaded your picture, just blow it up to the size you want on the host website, right click on the image, and choose "properties" on the drop down menu that will appear. Copy the URL, then paste it in your post between the [ IMG ] and the [ /img ].
Hope this helps.
Tom
P.S.
Some host websites, Photobucket included, will actually have little windows associated with the pictures that already have the proper code and URL for posting the picture in another website, and all you have to do is click on the appropriate link and then paste it into your post. |

Thanks for the info. My son-in-law will have to read your instructions that I printed, since I'm basically computer illiterate. |

It is not nearly as complicated as it sounds, and once you have done it a time or two, it is a piece of cake.

Manhy thanks, Tom. The funny is, I already know how to post photos here - I use Photobucket - but I keep forgetting which URL to use on the Photobucket page. Duh! [B)] [8]
