Thanks, this is a great forum!
Welcome, Calumetregionforever.
I would like to see some pictures like that, too!

I can close my eyes and smell Goldblatt's and hear the bongs. We were at Pirogi Fest and there was a booth with local historical items and they had a Goldblatt bong that you could hit with a small mallot.

Describe, please? I have a very strong memory of "bong, bong, bong ... bong, bong, bong" sounds used at a store, probably Goldblatt's, to send some kind of signals. I'm pretty sure that's what you're talking about. Can anyone tell me more?
Thanks,
Bill

You have it Bill. It was code like two bongs - pause- three bongs meant something to the employees.
The smell I refer to came from the deli/store in the basement on the north side of the building.
Used to get my shoes shined at the stand by the men room.

I believe the bong noise was a part of the pneumatic tube system--employees sent cash and tickets through those to the office on another floor and vice-versa. Anyone know if my belief is true?

It's possible I guess. I don't know what reason they would have to bong with the tubes though. I know stores use code and now they just say the code numbers over the PA system.

I too would love to see indoors pictures of Goldblatt's and Minas from days past. I can recall taking the bus downtown with my mother to shop, especially at Christmas time when town was bustling with traffic and shoppers...my, what a downer when I recently visited the area and took a drive downtown only to see what time starting with River Oaks has wrought! Stores and theaters are all gone, where my father worked at Solon's Tap on Sibley just west of Walgreen's was an empty field and, where Goldblatt's once proudly stood there's a park. If Heaven is what I think it is, I plan to revisit many of the places that brought so much happiness and memories in the late 40's and 1950's. Speaking of pneumatic tubes, I recall seeing those mainly at Penny's on Hohman and, I believe (?) at Minas' |

Sounds like you share my love for the old Downtown Hammond, Chuck. Did you read my essay about Downtown in the Downtown Hammond thread? I'll bet you can relate to what it says in that essay.
When I first saw what is left of Downtown after not having been there since Goldblatt's, Walgreen's, the Pathenon, and Minas's were torn down, I almost cried. It was one of the saddest sights I have ever seen.

Bob, thanks for the great pictures of Hammond and the history of Goldblatt's dating back to the Lion Dept. Store which I never heard of before now. Saddest part; however, were those taken of the demolition of the Goldblatt's store as we knew it :(

While looking around the web, I found this exterior photo of Goldblatts:

Here's a link to a photo gallery on the Hammond, in website:
http://www.gohammond.com/web/photo_gallery.phtml#/content/start/
Roll your mouse over the "Gallery menu" and click on the historic photos, 32 I believe. You'll enjoy them. No dates on most. There is a group of pictures showing the Goldblatt's explosion in '93.
Also a few of the Woodmar Shopping Center
