I did not expect an abundance of replies to my Valentine's Day post, but I am surprised to get zero posts about growing up and falling in love in Hammond.

Sorry, Paddy.
I don't remember my first kiss, but I sure do remember being "in love" in fifth grade with Mary Ann McTaggart. That darned old Robert Blair won her affections, though. My first heartbreak. :(

People who see Hammond today can't envision what a great place it was to grow up in when the region was thriving. |

AMEN!
Some might love the Hammond of today, but to me it bears no resemblance to the place I loved as I was growing up.

I guess for me there are two kinds of first kisses; one, your first young and innocent kiss, and second your first serious and passionate kiss, in either case, out of respect, I wont kiss and tell, but I will say in both cases the girls were older than me. I really miss the old Hammond; there were so many places one could take a lady for a nice date. |

Gotta agree with Bill on this one....Silence is golden! However, I will say that it happened, not in Hammond, but while parked at Whiting beach, looking across the water at the Chicago skyline.

Sorry about jumping into this one so late, but I have been away for a little while... The when or where escapes me now, but I do remember who. I probably was about fifteen at the time. It must have been the summer of 1958. You won't believe this. The girl was the same young lady I married five years later when she had just graduated from IU and I had one semester to go. We will celebrate our 46th anniversary in June. When we got married -- at the Presbyterian Church in Hessville by the way -- I was a few weeks away from turning 21. At that time my parents had to go to the Court House in Crown Point with us to sign the papers. How times have changed!!!

It is TOTALLY cool that you ended up marrying the first gal you ever kissed!
But ... you BETTER NOT let the Mrs. know that you cannot remember the when and where of that first kiss, or you are gonna be in BIG TIME trouble! :)

What a great story.
I noted that over 100 people read this thread, but few have replied. To those who demurred from responding, please consider posting your thoughts about growing up in Hammond. Although my "First Kiss" post was themed on St. Valentine's Day, my intent was to get you thinking about coming of age in Hammond - and sharing your memories. |

It's Valentine's day again!! I can't remember my first kiss; maybe that's why there are so few responses to this question. What I do remember is looking for a place to park at night where the cops wouldn't bother you and your girl friend. We finally found Bobbi Beach which was lake front across a hundred railroad tracks in front of Lever Bros. Were there any other good 'passion pits'? I wonder where the kids park today without any drive-in movies? |

Thorton Woods. The cops patrolled and as long as they cold see heads they didn't bother you. |

There are few posts here, because most gentlemen don't tell.
...which is not to cast any storytellers here in a bad light. |

It was Donna and she kissed me. We met at the Kennedy Theater and I must of been 12 or 13 at the time. The kiss took place behind Plaza Lanes in Highland.

I remember who and where, but not when. I remember going home and sitting down at the dinner table, knowing full well that mom, dad and brother could tell by looking at me that I had just been KISSED by a GIRL. I couldnt believe that we made it through a whole meal and nobody said anything about it. I vowed then and there never to do that again. Too much guilt. Of course that vow was faithfully kept by myself until after school the next day!! I was hooked. I was a junkie and have never quit again to this very day. Happy Valentines Day. Tom W |

My first was with a new neighbor that moved in ...
Hessville ... Can't remember exactly how old I was but not much ...
Her name was Sharon (Roche I believe it was) ...
I will NEVER forget her ... she made me feel like I was on top of the world ...
They ended up moving after a short stay ... I missed her greatly.

I recently learned that the "Sally" in my post passed away several years ago. Her real name was Sharon. |

My first kiss was, in all unlikelyhood, a church basement where I had Boy Scout meetings. It was halloween, and a "witch" of the ripe old age of 14 took advantage of me (kissed me) romantically when I was at the tender age of 12.
Funny; years later, I was engaged to a girl from Gavit also, while going to Morton myself.

Surprisingly, I don't remember my first kiss.
However, my earliest "opposite sex" memory was my first dance with a girl. It was at our 8th grade graduation party. I was too shy to ask any girl, but a girl did ask me. Although I did enjoy dancing with her, the girl that I had a crush on ended up asking my friend to dance instead of me. So it was both a high and a low for me. |

I must have been 14, I'm not sure. I was mid term and graduating from 8th grade, the next day, when Larry Cummings got me outside of the shelter house at Hessville Park after a night of skating. He said I couldn't go home till I let him kiss me. I kept telling him I had to be home by 9:30, but he held on to me. I was in tennis shoes and bobby socks. I finally let him kiss me, but not before I got frostbite on my toes and couldn't wear my brand new first pair of hi heels on stage to get my diploma. He ended up becoming a priest so it was all for nothing anyway, lol. |

Hmmmmmmm....
Was this the same Larry Cummings...the big, strong silent type, that graduated high school in '67 (I think)? He was in my older brother's grade school class at OLPH and was also our paper boy.
Same guy? I think I'm shocked by your story.

Might be. I believe he graduated in 67 from Bishop Noll. I only remember he was good looking and I had a mad crush on him but had never kissed a boy so I was afraid to. I saw him years later at the OLPH carnival. I was so embarrassed cuz I had just had my 1st child 6 days earlier and was in no shape to be running into former boyfriends, lol. That's when I found out he was a priest, in St. Louis I believe. |

Or running FROM former boyfriends.
That's him; he DID graduate Noll in '67 with my older brother Mike. Never would have expected Mr.Cummings to join the priesthood.
