I can't really account for the quality fluctuation - it's all Shep. I'm onclined to usually just pick a show from roughly the same day in history. If there's more than one to pick from I may listen and choose one over another, but the selections are often rather automatic.
You never can really tell what shows will resonate with a protion of the audience. Not everyone likes the same types of shows. I know a lot of people say they like the kid stories, but they are really rather uncommon, at least in the early to mid '60s. I personally enjoy the so-called "deepies" like this week's show on boredom, or the shows about the nature of mankind as Shep sees it. I'm less thrilled about some of the car talk, both on the shows and on the list - never had a car, and probably never will. But he can make any subject fascinating.
Take the "Parade of Humanity" shows for example. They are fascinating to hear, even though he does little more than read names off of postcards - I've been tempted to air one of those, but I wonder if the general public would be so fascinated all these years later. |

Loved the show in which all the music was keyed to the theme of Shep's show, which was about "Kicks." Would love to hear more shows like that. And fewer featuring Wire. [:)] |

The Jean Shepherd rebroadcasts are a time machine into my youth. I am amazed at the familiarity despite the multi-decade hiatus. I wonder whether anyone young finds him as addicting. |

Max was brave enough to air a "partial program" from a long-lost live Limelight show, and it was classic Shep all the way, a tale of his childood "junking" with Flick,Bruner and Schwartz in the alley behind their homes.
More light was also shed of Mrs Stryker, the "old doll" who lived cati-corner across the street from Shep, who for apparently other decades had been the "keeper of baseballs",accidently popped into her yard,(or window).
It was nice to hear the Ballantine commercial break in the middle, as well........
